Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA-Travel Essay

A great battle of the U.S. civil war took place at Gettysburg on July 1, 2, 3 1863.

Robert E. Lee, in command of the Army of Northern Virginia, marched his army into Pennsylvania with two goals.  The first goal was to remove the fighting from Virginia, which had suffered a great amount of devastation, and to do the fighting in federal areas.  The second goal was to demonstrate that Robert E. Lee might be able to win one or more battles in Pennsylvania and effectuate a political solution.

George G. Meade, in command of the Army of the Potomac, brought up all available forces for the fight that was to come about in Gettysburg.  Neither Army had planned to fight at Gettysburg.

The fighting was savage in many areas of the battlefield.  The fighting developed place names which will always be remembered; Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, Big Round Top, Devil’s Den, Culp’s Hill, Pickett’s Charge, Cemetery Ridge, Seminary Ridge, and The Stone Wall.  The 20th Maine is a fabulous book if you can find it.
