Acadia National Park - Travel Essay The highway to Acadia National Park is route 3 General: Most of Acadia National Park is on Mount Desert Island but not all of Acadia National Park is on Mount Desert Island. Some nearby islands are in Acadia National Park. The entrance onto Mount Desert Island is by way of route 3 over a very short bridge. The largest city/town is Bar Harbor. The park was created by President Woodrow Wilson. The park was renamed Acadia National Park in January 1929. The wealthy John D. Rockefeller, Jr. designed and constructed a network of carriage trails and bridges on the island.
Things to do: Acadia National Park is a bicycle and hiking paradise. There are many hills and mountains in the park. The highest peak is Cadillac Mountain. Every hill, mountain, and bend in the trail will expose great scenery. Be sure to bring your camera. There are some Moose and Black Bear on the island so keep a watch out. At the latitude of Mount Desert Island, Swimming in the ocean is a very cold and short experience. Bar Harbor is the best bet for tourists. Bring your kayak, laptop, guitar and chess set.
Geological Feature: Somes Sound is an interesting inlet of ocean water that almost cuts Mount Desert Island into two pieces. When I visited long ago, Somes Sound was said to be a Fjord. I was told that not only was it a Fjord but the only Fjord on the whole east coast of the USA. Now, the “experts” say it is not a Fjord. I visited in summertime and I rate this location as GREAT!
