Heaven - Don't Trade It for the World!

December 31, 2000

I was listening to a gentleman talk on the radio today about asking some young children a question.
The question was "how many would like to go to heaven?" All the hands went flying up. Then he asked, "how many of you want to go right now?" All the hands quickly dropped.
That's an interesting question and interesting response!

I'm sure if you walked into a football stadium full of fans, you would get the same response. Maybe, being the diehard fans that they are, they want to see the rest of the football game; especially on Super Bowl Sunday.

How about walking into a hospital room of new mothers that had just given birth. They want to go to heaven but, they want to see their children grow up first. They want to see that first smile, first tooth, first step and so on through life's cycle of life.

Go into a class room of teenagers and you will likely get a similar response. Yes, they want to go to heaven but, first they want to go to the senior prom, finish college or marry their high school sweetheart or play professional football.

Go into any church and ask a congregation if they want to go to heaven and they will all raise their hands. Now ask them if they are ready to go NOW and watch the hands slowly drop. A few may be ready because they have lived a life for God and they feel like it may be close to their time. The aches and pains of life have worn them down and they are ready to walk on streets of gold. However, the majority of the people you ask if they are ready to go to heaven today, will say no.

I began to ponder the question myself. If I was asked today would I say yes. It's a difficult question but, it shouldn't be. I began to think about my son and how life is good for him and I want to see what he does after college and what girl he marries and what his children will look like. I thought about my husband that has been such a blessing to me and how it would break his heart to lose me.

We all think we want to go to heaven but, how many of us are truly ready? Have we walked the walk that God showed us or did we go our own way? Did we truly seek after the kingdom of God and his righteousness? Did we witness to as many people as we could or did we let our neighbors and co-workers and family members die and go to hell?

Did we truly spend time in our Bible searching through God's word or did we sit mindlessly in front of the TV night after night. Did we spend hours in prayer seeking God's will and praying for others needs? Did we do our own thing or did we serve God with all our heart and soul and mind?
Tough questions? They shouldn't be.

We all know what we are suppose to do. The spirit is willing but, the flesh is weak. Why would any of us want to spend one minute more on earth if we could be in the presence of God today?

I must ask another question. Why would you want to risk spending eternity in hell by not serving a living God? That's the question I ask people who are not believers. Then I tell them that I would rather live my life following God than spend one minute in the pits of hell. I tell them they have nothing to lose. If there is no God and no hell, still they have lived a good life. On the other hand, if there is a God and there is a heaven, I want to go there. If I'm right and I have lived my life according to God's commandments I will go there. I tell them that they are the ones taking a risk; that my fate is sealed and I know where I'm going to live eternity. If I'm right and they are wrong, where will they spend eternity?

If you don't sincerely know the living God and his son, I invite you to meet him today. Tomorrow may be too late.
