broken

poem by kitty- ann Espi

When you ask about a man’s dreams

He’ll tell you how great his dreams are

It’d be made of rainbows without any rain

It’d be made of colors, no chains

It’d be great as the sunshine

It’d be bright like a day after a storm

And starry like a clear, clear night

And roads are trudged down without a fight

He’ll tell you how it’ll make him love life

And he’ll tell you that in plain sight.

But when you ask a broken man’s dreams

He’ll tell you how you should love the peace

While a baby sleeps

And how happy a dog is at his feet

He’ll tell you that life is short

“So you’d better get moving, sport”

He’ll tell you without a smile

That happiness is something you acquire once in every while

Respect is never given but earned

And that wishes are nothing more than broken promises.

He’ll tell you about defeat and the bitter-sweet

Vengeance that he can’t keep

He’ll tell you how good life is

If only he’d do all of these.

And that childhood never happened, it ceased to exist

You’ll be sad to know it’s true

But you’d better believe it.

Believe it now, believe it then,

Cause once a broken man has spoken

You’ll see that life is just as easy and yet so hard

Once you’d learn you too can be broken.
