Gift for the Birth of a Boy

When you hold him
for the first time,
your heart will overflow.
When you let him go
for the first time,
your heart will break.
In between,
cherish the memory
of the first times.
Through long, lonely hours
in the middle of the night.
Through tantrums, illnesses and messy diapers;
each time you have the chance,
hold him,
and remember.

Next Time
Poem by Nathan Saunders

Your pain was always felt,
Screams eternally heard but never acted on.
Constant promises of I will be brave.
Next time, I'll stop it,
Next time, I'll protect you.
I was suppose to love you both,
But he was too!!!
He was never suppose to cause this.
Embarrassment was more abundant than all,
Apologies always following, but never believed.
It would happen again,
The only mystery was when.
Was he too tired, too burdened, too overwhelmed to love us?
A child should not know the meaning of coward,
A child should never be counted on as a savior.
Still, next time, I'll stop him.
Next time, I promise I'll help.

A Realization

Poem by Lisa Jempty

At first I saw the smallest of us dwindling

away, like a candle flickering

and my arms reaching out to embrace

the wax, melting farther

though the flame still burned brightly

and perhaps I even knew then

the unavoidable fate of this dance

for which we've sacrificed much

of ourselves and our innocence

to be crushed by the short-lived nirvana

otherwise known as first love.
