Choice
Poem by Joseph Simmons
We came from far off places
and separated times,
but still I hoped some day that
you could still be mine.
I did not try to claim you
or hide you far apart:
I hoped that I could win you
by giving you my heart!
I have no right to steal
love you will not give,
so if my dream's unreal
I just must leave and live!
Please answer me the question
resounding through my mind:
could I be your selection
for all the rest of time?
Now I've revealed my secret:
I stand, self-exposed,
and bow before the hatchet
if your heart should stay closed.
I fear to ask your mind, dear,
fear you'll turn away.
Will you say the words to ease my fears?
The choice is yours: which way?

Confusion
Poem by Joseph Simmons
You know your love is just confusion
when you're in love with illusion.
What is this love? That's all I ask:
is it true or another mask?
A woman turns my world upside-down,
my mind fumbles like a clown.
Is it love that brings me pain,
burning fire in my brain?
Are you my woman, are you some demon,
have you been loving me, or just scheming?
O love! You rained over me--
now I'm drowning in your sea!
I know my love is all confusion
cause I don't know if it's illusion.
Come to me, love! I throw myself open:
wash me away into your ocean.
Don't care any more--washed on the rock,
blown away in lightning-jolt shock!
Come to me love! Blow me away
flash from above make me your slave
I feel I'm gone gone to
my grave
but I live on. Hidden away.
Come to me love! Pierce to my heart,
pull me together, then tear me apart!
But is this love just confusion:
am I in love with an illusion?
