You Never Told Me

Poem by Kerry Ervin

Sitting on the toilet seat, I watched you comb your hair,
Putting stuff on your lips to look pretty, so Daddy kissed you there.
You’ll find a prince without cooties one day you tried to say,
Crossing my eyes and  making silly faces, I continued to look your way.
Beautifully rosy you made your cheeks, And eyes to shine like the stars
At five I was mesmerized, I had the prettiest Mommy by far.

Love the way you want to be loved, and as if  it’s never brought pain.
Every love is new love, and you deserve to have it again and again.
The bumps in Life will get to you,
You just have to move along.
Life can be a sweet Mystery, hum, pretend to sing it’s song.

You told me so many things, as a child, throughout my days,
Never talk to strangers,  but  be nice and kind,
Respect my elders,  Never steal or cause harm,
Words to live by, always I’ve kept in mind.

You told me the hardest parts, and reflected upon a few,
You spoke of the tears I’d shed raising my own one day….so very true.
How even if it hurt A Mother had better not  bend.
Stick to your  guns with them, don’t give in
Advice that made us  look back, as we both recalled different  and grinned.

I learned how to listen to others, through things you have told,
How friendships begin and blossom, how they are worth more than gold.
How little things can be so precious, how even dandelions can make a smile,
How to love forever,  if you travel that extra mile.
Never give up, go for what the world holds
How life’s most important things are never bought nor sold.

Looking back over the years I have searched without a trace,
Looking back and listening, I can still see your pretty face.
I can hear your words of wisdom, every one I have recalled
Searching frantically of the one I now  need most of all.
It isn’t there, you never said it, I’ve searched  from end to end….
How to say good bye……. to let go of my Mother, My Mom, My best friend .
You never told me.

Dedicated to Cheryl Latham, My angel in heaven.

Blue Collar

Poem by Joseph Simmons

I saw you yesterday,
wanted to ask you to stay,
but you were gone.
I looked, but couldn't see you,
reached but couldn't touch you,
only had my memory,
and that was not enough for me!
I had to find somehow
where you were from.

I want a blue collar girl
from the everyday world,
a girl who isn't complicated,
fabricated or re-created!
Don't have to be sophisticated--
just show me love that isn't baited,
that flowers long before it's faded.
I'm not young, but I'm not dated.

Now I check the cafeteria,
hoping for a chance to see ya.
I'll walk through this whole factory
if that is what it takes to see
your lovely face and talk to you--
I've got to see this thing through!
I don't know what pulls me to you,
only that I feel I knew you
another time, that you were mine,
and your love is all I long to find!
