Book Excerpts | On Top Of The World Poem by David Cannon
Once upon a summers sky,
Not so long ago,
I walked a long a dusty road,
In all of summer's glow,
Taking tiresome steps I sat,
Upon an old slate wall,
Blazing sun beat down on me,
Beckoned by natures call,
I cast my eyes towards the hill,
That breaches crystal sky,
Mind persuades my tired legs,
To stand for one last try,
Amidst the flush fields of wheat,
Which edge the arid lane
A solitary puddle quenches thirst,
For the birds that long for rain,
Miles of dirt I tread my feet,
Through cherry blossom rows,
Shades of pink gently cascade,
To coat the winding road,
The twisting lane rises on,
I long to perch and stop,
I venture on though tired I am,
For I am soon to reach the top,
Pacing heart I reach the height,
In awe of the vast patchwork land,
I sit on lush green meadow grass,
Shield the light with the edge of my hand,
Worn I lay to rest my head,
Take the gravel out of my shoe
Blistered feet and weary bones,
But I am rewarded by the view.
