Again

Poem by Joseph Simmons

I always knew
I'd see you
again.
Your wayward ghost
has always
returned,
haunting background scenes
in most of my dreams
until I want to scream
but I don't dare.
I always knew
I'd leave you
again.
The open road
calls my soul
its friend.
I can't ignore its siren call
though it mean I'm risking all.
I'm torn till I must scream,
but I don't dare.
I'm on the road
and homeless
again.
Gave up my
possessions
and friends.
I just became a consciousness
flickering in the morning mist,
a ghost to match your memory,
my friend.
I always knew
I'd see you
again.
Served my soul to the devil
when I was a teen.
I wandered far
away from you
pursuing nonsense dreams.
Now I long to find the road,
escape from memory overload,
return from where I strayed:
if I'd known the loneliness
I would have stayed!
Now I watch you from afar
in your separate world,
knowing we can never be
together as we should!

1914

Poem by Joseph Simmons

After some centuries laying up,
the ground no longer cold,
the rain almost warm,
the trickle began
in long thought sighs
against a sky rimmed black
with fadeouts to the right
and left, to a world unknown
unknowing.
As the stream increased
emptiness began
flowing in,
and vague alarm sounds
from the distance.
Thoughts of leaving
rising,
cold shadow
of regret for could-have-been.
Leaving
all with sadness immeasurable,
the stream slows
the rumble, seeming from east,
cannot stop return.
It will be different.
It will be your turn.
