Non Fiction by Sanjukta Krishnagopal
Becky never received an opportunity to play in her school volleyball team, the reason being that she couldn't afford the fees. Becky came from a lower-middle class family, where her father worked day and night in order to put aside enough money to fulfill their basic needs. But strangely enough, she wasn't given a position in the team on the basis of her extraordinary talents and merits. But nothing would deter her from being a member of the volleyball team. She knew she had it all, and didn't want to lack behind because of her economic status.
She practiced hard at home and kindled her passion for volleyball. At the same time, she made arrangements for money too, not wanting to put pressure on her parents, she obtained a job as a newspaper seller. Everyday in the morning, she would tell her parents that she needed to go to school early because of extra classes and instead go around selling newspapers. She also saved all the money given to her for travel to and fro from school and walked the distance instead. Because of her overexerting herself by walking she was tired and sleepy during school hours. One fine day on her way back home, she collapsed right in the middle of the road. Luckily a passerby happened to notice her, and sprinkled some water on her so as to help her revive.
He waited for a while to let her recover and then said, "What happened, my child? Are you fine?"
"Yes." She said softly as she made an unsuccessful attempt to get up."
"Here I'll help you. I'll drop you home." He said. On their way he asked, "how came you fainted little girl? Not able to take the pressure any longer she burst out with her story and told him about her interest in volleyball and the barrier her economic status placed in the path of her becoming a successful volleyball player. She told him about how much she practiced each day and how much she loved the game. He was truly pleased with her dedication and zeal for the same. After they reached home, he had a small chat with her mother and then departed.
"There's great news for you Becky!" her mom said lovingly and enthusiastically. "The person you just encountered is none other than the famous and extremely talented volleyball coach, Mr. Morgan. He is delighted with your interest in volleyball, and wants to meet you tomorrow for an audition. If you play well, and prove yourself to him, he will personally coach you for no fee. He says that our country needs such keen and committed players. Such commitment coupled with talent is the making of a fantastic player. He says you already have the former part of it. Now he wants to test your skill. This is the opportunity of a lifetime. Consider yourself lucky, go and give your best, and be rest assured that god will surely give you your well deserved place in Mr. Morgan's team."
Becky was overjoyed at this news. She screamed with delight and hugged her mother tightly. 'So after all', she thought, 'deserving people always get their reward in time. So what if I'm not in the school team. I have a chance of being in Mr. Morgan's team which is far superior and of better quality than my school can ever produce.' She gave a deep sigh of satisfaction and then sank of into her thoughts.
The next day she met Mr. Morgan and put up her best performance and sure enough she was selected. In the years to come, Becky went on to represent the state and later even her country and made her family and coach proud. Becky achieved great stature in her profession…volleyball, and all thanks to one day which had unknowingly made her life.
