The Amazing Group
Non-fiction by Chad Larson
The "Group" started out small with about seven teens just hanging
out and having good, clean fun. Over the course of a year, the Group
has grown to include over 20 kids. Once people started to come to the
"parties" (I use "parties" for a lack of a better word) they just kept
wanting to come back. The Group is like a room full of fun and the
door is open for everyone. The fun of hanging out with a group of
good, Christian peers was so much fun, few could resist.
The Group includes many different types of kids, which include:
wrestlers, runners, nerds, geeks, soccer players, basketball players,
golfers, musicians, snowboarders, photographer, gamers, people of
multiple talents, and everything in between (including a New Yorker),
all bonded together by a love of Christ and a love to have fun. The
Group even crosses the bounds of school districts; teens from, South
Medford, Phoenix, SOU, St. Mary’s, Stanford, and Princeton hang out
with homeschoolers. How can such different people be such good
friends?
The "parties" include many exciting activities. Card games are
extremely popular. Mafia is sure to get everyone fired up. With
suspicious eyes looking around the room, the mafias try to act
innocent but are usually caught. Even when the mafia game ends, the
Group always has the energy to play a high intensity game of spoons,
which usually include one or more bodies flying across the table
groping for the last spoon. If everyone is too tired for these
vigorous card games, then the Group will settle for kemps, nertz, or "Stryper".
When the Group feels more adventurous a game of Ultimate Frisbee fires
off or even some late night rounds of capture the flag.
Church is also a huge part of the Group. From Wednesdays at R.V.F.
to Saturdays at Applegate, a church service usually has almost the
entire Group in attendance. The Group almost always hangs out after a
church service, especially at the "pantry" on Wednesday nights. Even
with all of the fun the Group has, the Group understands that God is
the most important thing and should always come first.
How can so many different people that have only known each other for
about a year feel almost like family? It is a miracle that can’t be
explained except that God has blessed the Group.
